Shortly after our arrival in GladeKeep, we were stopped by the Mayor of the town. The Mayor began to fill us in on some local news about the recent orc attacks. He mentioned that the city didn't have the greatest defense, and that the city guard had been depleted a bit recently. He offerred each of us 3 gp per day to join up. Llan and Azrael joined up rather quickly. This dissapointed me some as I did not want to spend much time toiling in local affairs. I needed to get back to Hillydale, and find her body. She needs to be put to rest. But I did not want to leave Llan, so I also joined up.
The Mayor was glad to hear that some of us would be joining up. At least until Jackle began asking questions. We did get some good information thanks to Jackle's questions. Apparently there were no set patrols. All their really was, is a group of Rangers who were patrolling the forest, and would communicate with the town if there was something wrong. However, since there was also no set communication schedules to check in, and the fact that they hadn't heard from the Rangers in a while, it was uncertain whether any of the Rangers were still alive. Jackle took the opportunity to berate the Mayor and his inneffective defenses. Jackle wanted a drink at the tavern before making his decision. A drink sounded good so I figured I'd accompnay the group. As we left the old man Thomas asked to speak to Jackle and Llan alone for a moment. Azrael and I continued towards the tavern.
When we entered the tavern we sat down at a table that provided a good view of the doorway. It also had a good view of the stage where a young maiden was dancing to entertain the guys. I ordered a tankard of ale, and a soup-like substance. When the barmaiden brought us our stuff I asked her about local news. The only news of note was the end of the city's annual carnival. What made it so newsworthy was the fact that one of the town's wealthier men, Tom Blackburn, had his house robbed, and ended up losing a very valuable, and very large diamond necklace. Well finally something of note, if we were going to be in this town for a while, I figured I was going to do something prosperous. The necklace had to either be worth quite a bit, or would get a handsome fee for it's return. Either way it would be gold for my pockets. I scanned the room and noticed a man of particularly unsaviory demeanor. He would probably be the first place to start getting information. Sometimes you can just tell a fellow rogue. Slowly, I was starting to get the guy to open up. I knew with a few more drinks I would be able to get some information from him. I had a feeling that he was quite in tune with the local underground movement. Of course as I was just getting somewhere, my brother came in hollering at the bar keep and generally being obnoxious as usual. If I could I would put him to sleep right then. The guy I was talking to got frightened off and left the bar. I decided I would follow him. I managed to do well hiding in the shadows as I followed him down a series of alleyways. After a while I saw him duck down yet another alleyway, he seemed to be in a hurry. As I followed him around the corner I was quickly introduced into his fist. He picked me up and started questioning me. I managed to get him to believe that I was just an "honest thief" with some information on a big score that I needed the local thieves help with. Once he believed me he led me to a back of a house. We entered in, and I saw him do something at a door at the end of the corridor. It was most likely a hand signal of some sort, but I couldn't see clearly. Soon the door opened and we were beckoned inside. I entered what looked like a shop with multiple possessions strewn about, which I'm sure were all stolen. The man I was following introduced himself as Lampwick. He introduced an older gentleman sitting at a desk in the shop as Fence. Lampwick then told Fence what I had told him regarding a big job. When asked for my name I provided them with my elvish child name of Prometheus. Once they had trusted me, the conversation started to flow. Lampwick, as he was always happy to tell, was in charge of the streets. There wasn't anything that went on in the town he didn't know about. After a couple hours I was able to steer the conversation towards the diamond necklace. I did not need to wait any longer to find out who had been behind it, for as soon as I mentioned the diamond Lampwick lit up, with a proud glow. Lampwick told me that this was just the first step in his plan, in a plot to murder the Mayor. Information that I surely knew would come in handy later. I also knew that this plan must be stopped if at all possible. I mentioned that I was going to be taking a job with the city's guard to get a better view of how the law works around here. Lampwick was happy to hear this, as he told me they have been trying to get someone on the inside of the guard for quite some time, and that it would be really useful for them to have me there. Figuring that I had done a good job of ingratiating myself into the thieves guild, and soon enough into that diamond necklace, I decided that it would be time to head back to the tavern. Lampwick accompanied me on the way back, and we agreed to meet up in a couple days. Upon entering the Tavern I found out that my brother and Azrael had rented part of the common room. I figured that it would be best for me to sleep in the barracks tonight, in case Lampwick had someone watching me. Once at the barracks I went ahead and prepared my spells for the night, and then finally got some actual rest for the first night in a while. Or at least I hoped I would. Trackbacks
