There isn't enough soap in the world for me to ever feel clean again after having to watch the episode Sub Rosa. Having Dr. Crusher get intimately involved with what is essentially a ghost that has been intimate with all of her former female relatives was just disturbing. Shame on you Jeanna F. Gallo. And don't miss Listener Jim's longest comment yet! This podcast covers episodes 13-16 of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 7.
Various topics discussed in this podcast include: Peter Nash Day entries and winners: 1st prize Preston, runner up: Skylar and Anne Celebrating Carl Sagan Prime Directive controversy, Zeroth law Sub Rosa is a bad episode and everyone involved with it should be ashamed Would you help your racial enemy? Will you order someone to die? Troi should NOT be a commander! Yes, but I didn't want to make anyone feel like a loser. Plus apparently Mrs. Aod is still planning to submit something.

I'm surprised you didn't discuss the fact that what Nikolai liked about the alien culture he saved was their "rich spiritual life," and when the alien who left the holodeck was given the choice to go back to his people his concern wasn't that they would think him a madman and not believe him, but that they *would* believe him and it would destroy all their previously held beliefs. There's a clear implication that these aliens are deeply religious, and that the discovery of spaceships would shred their religion to pieces. I found that to be a troubling idea, since my spiritual beliefs don't exclude the possibility of spaceships. Since his personal spiritual beliefs have been shattered, this gives an extremely sad cast to his suicide. What a sad, despairing act it must have been, since he obviously can't believe in an afterlife or any other spiritual continuation of the soul anymore.

You make a good point - while I did note this in the episode, it didn't really connect for me how much this affected his ultimate decision. Thanks for pointing it out, it really does make the ending much richer, but much sadder at the same time.

OMG YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME I HAAAAAATED SUB ROSA! DIE SUB ROSA! DIEEEEEEEEEE!
Daboo on :
I have more to say about Sub Rosa but I'm sure my frank use of language would shock and appall all of you.

Preach it, sister!
Daboo on :
No seriously, you boys are too squeamish.

Joey, I quite enjoyed the discussion regarding 0th law. I've never read any Asimov, though I hope to get around to it one day.
Peter, I find myself disagreeing with your point about a downside to the Prime Directive. It seems to me that such a downside exists without it demanding the Federation stand by and watch others die. The downside would be that regardless of what natural resources are discovered on a planet, the Federation will not be able to access them if the planet is inhabited by a pre-Warp culture. Certain scientific discoveries will not be made. Perhaps a planet rich in dilythium crystals will be unable to be mined or traded with. This would be a downside to the Federation itself, while the way the writers treat the PD currently puts the downside on those who are to be protected by the law, making the law no protection at all in certain circumstances. |
