I thought that the conversation about "excessive honesty in a commander" was very interesting. Several years ago, I took a class in public speaking. One of the things that my professor emphasized constantly was, never apologize for your preparation or your performance. He said that if you do, your audience will believe that there is reason for the apology, even if there is not. In other words, by apologizing, you make yourself appear worse than you are. Do you think this is true in all situations where we apologize?

I've often been told the same thing. I haven't yet decided whether it's true, but I know that sometimes my guilt over inflicting substandard material on people is greater than my concern over how THEY will judge the material - in these cases, I apologize anyway, regardless of the 'rule' you shared here.

But now I'm wondering: have you been unintentionally over-broad in the use of the word "all" here? I would certainly say there are some times where an apology can only make things better...when you've really hurt someone, if you don't at least ATTEMPT an apology, it certainly makes things *worse*.

I actually haven't been unintentionally broad. I've noticed that there are times when I feel terrible for something that I've done, and I apologize for it, and the people that I'm apologizing to are surprised. In their minds, there was no need for the apology. In some situations, at least, it appears that the presence of an apology creates a need for the apology. What changes that? The presence of real hurt?

I am a sunday school teacher. And I am a snob when it comes to such classes and teachers. I am good, and so I expect others in my same situation to be as equally good. When I attend other peoples SS classes and I hear them begin by saying "I'm sorry..." it drives me bonkers. I automatically retreat in to my own brain and only pay cursory attention to their lesson. They are supposed to be the expert on that lesson for that day.

But on the other hand, I have felt the need to apologize at the beginning of some blog posts because I knew my writing/ideas was not up to "proper standards" and I felt bad for those that would have to read through it in order to get the point I was trying to put across. Perhaps I shouldn't have done it considering my paragraph above.

What dictates the necessity of an apology? Is it used to make the offender feel better about their action/inaction? Or is there a set of rules that you've experienced in society that says to you, "When this happens, I should apologize."

If you feel the need to apologize and someone is perturbed or feel it is unnecessary or distracting, does that make it any less of a need to apologize?

Do you apologize to be sensitive to others or to make yourself feel better? Or something else? I will sometimes say when questioned about why I am apologizing, "I am apologizing for me and not for you."
