As we left the barracks disaster struck. Lampwick appeared out of the Shadows behind the Mayor, and slit his throat. So much for protecting the Mayor, at least now I know there won't be a reward for the diamond and can just keep it for myself. As the Mayor's lifeless body fell to the ground, Lampwick soon learned a problem with hiding in the shadows of a building. It tends to leave your back up against a wall. When we all surrounded Lampwick, the thief was unable to escape, and before long Thellonius landed a fearsome blow that snapped Lampwicks neck, causing him to join the Mayor in death.
Upon his body we found a scroll, which when I broke the seal and read it aloud said the following. Lampwick, I foresee that Lt. Coldwater will be going down shortly. It's up to you to finish the job. There was no signature, or other sign of who could have sent the message. We decided to take the bodies of the Mayor, and Lampwick with us to the Barracks. Jackle and the Sargeant didn't exactly get off to the best start. Matters weren't helped any, when as soon as he saw us with the Mayor's body the Sargeant began accusing us of murdering the Mayor. Honestly I can't blame him, everyone in the town seemed willing to accuse us of all sorts of bad things. Fortunately, we were able to explain the situation without Jackle's head exploding in rage.
The Sargeant asked about Lt. Coldwater and we explained that he was now in jail. Jackle began to get a bad feeling and wanted to go check on Coldwater, and make sure he was still there. Thellonius and Vanya, the druid's fox, also went. Thanks to the link between the druid and her fox, we were able to see what they say. Everyone in the jailhouse, the former lieutenant included, had been brutally massacred. Once everyone returned from the jailhouse, we decided we must get ready to prepare the city against the orc attack. Everyone that is, except Jackle, who just wanted to get everyone in the town together, and just leave the city. Finally we were able to convince Jackle, that protecting a large group of people would be easier inside a fortified city, than it would if they were on the move strewn out over many miles. We asked the Sargeant about the Rangers on patrol, only to find out that they had been communicating with Coldwater exclusively. I had the Sargeant show me to Coldwater's old office, where I found a locked desk. I was able to pick the lock and we found a document. The document had a list of names, which the Sargeant confirmed was the names of the Rangers. Next to each name was a check mark. The check marks only helped increase Jackle's suspicions that the Rangers were dead, and I could find no evidence to the contrary. Finally we went about preparing the city for the attack. We set up pots of boiling oil as defense on the city walls, and also began setting up forest patrols. Jackle obviously determined to put the Sargeant in harms way wanted him to be the farthest out on patrols, but fortunately we all overrode that decision. We knew that tomorrow would bring a battle so we decided to rest. The city was as defended as we could make it in such a short time. Trackbacks
