Besides, the comparative opposite of 'Potter' isn't 'Gardner', It's 'Mason'! What a moron! People didn't get the last name 'Potter' from potting around in soil! NO! They got it from ceramics-ing. You know, making pots. Potting. So the opposite would be someone who works with stone, like a stonemason. Am I right?

From the opposing point of view, I laughed as hard as I've ever laughed at an OotS. As enjoyable as the Harry Potter books are, as an author I'm EXTREMELY annoyed by Ms. Rowling's tendency to do many of the things Rich just so effectively mocked.
It's like someone telling you candy is bad for you. That's what Harry Potter is: brain candy. Ancient Of Days on :
AFAIK, you're correct about the origins of the name Potter (see http://www.ancestry.com/search/SurnamePage.aspx?sourcecode=13304&html=b&fn=&ln=Potter&submit.x=36&submit.y=14 ). I'm not sure he was going for a "comparative opposite", though. When all is said and done, he got his point across. :)
