So I've been wondering ever since I saw the first trailer for the new Incredible Hulk Movie why they would redo the story so soon after pouring millions into the Ang Lee version. I mean, it was only 2003 when that came out. The reviews were mixed, but that doesn't seem like a good enough reason to simply write over it.

Then I saw more bits of the movie in promos on TV. When I saw Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark, clarity shined down and illuminated my understanding. Of course. They want an Avengers movie. That's why Mace Windu came and talked to Iron Man about S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers project after the credits.

Sure enough, here's what wikipedia has on the subject:

In August 2006, it was revealed by a stock market report that The Avengers was listed under Marvel films in development. It was later stated that Zak Penn, writer of the scripts for X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Elektra was to write the movie's script.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau said he would like to direct a film adaptation of The Avengers. This would be a crossover series to other upcoming Marvel films such as The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America. He also explained that Marvel has told him that "they're pretty clear on wanting to do it with the actors who’ve established the roles or to not do it at all." He continued, "I think it’s a good idea if you use the characters established in the other franchises that then come together for an event."

In a report to shareholders on May 5, 2008, Marvel Entertainment announced the release dates for two planned Avenger movies. The First Avenger: Captain America (working title) is scheduled for May 6, 2011, followed by the The Avengers, which is scheduled for July 2011.

The first reference to the Avengers is in the 2008 film Iron Man, when Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) appears in a post-credits scene and speaks with Tony Stark about the "Avenger Initiative." In the following The Incredible Hulk (film), Tony Stark has a Cameo appearance in a scene with General Ross, while in Iron Man 2, Thor will have a cameo.

I still don't see the justification for this upcoming atrocity. I just don't buy Eddie Norton as Banner. None for me, thanks.

(Keep in mind that the Hulk is my 2nd favorite hero ever, right behind Supes. I'm still not buying it.)

I didn't say Arwen and Eddie would be good, I just said that I finally understand the rationalization.

Too bad the Movie looks like it could very well be the worst Non Nicolas Cage movie I've seen in a while.
