Dare I say it? Yes. Yes I dare. What you need is a vampire!
Wednesday, May 5. 2010Thrombophilia - like Hemophilia, but the other way 'round
My wife says I need to be more open with people, so here goes:
On Friday of last week, I was diagnosed with thrombophilia, due to a genetic condition called Factor V Leiden. This caused a series of bloodclots in my left leg (deep vein thrombosis, or "DVT") as well as one in my lung (called a pulmonary embolism, or PE). For treatment, I'm confined to mostly bed rest and for the next six months have to make twice weekly visits to the doctor to check my PT/INR time (basically, "how long does it take you to stop bleeding?"). I have to do twice-daily injections in my stomach of something called Lovenox in my stomach, as well as taking a regular cocktail of pills including Warfarin and continuing my daily doses of Probenecid and Diclofenac for my gout - I have had to get one of those little pill organizers to keep it all straight.
Just so you know what to watch for in yourself, the only symptom of all of this was a swelling of my leg. I actually had 3 different doctors look at the symptom and dismiss it for several months before someone finally realized that I needed to get an ultrasound, which turned into being checked into the ER and an entire series of tests. Here's hoping this information is entirely useless to all of you! Trackbacks

LOL - I wasn't aware that vampires were anti-coagulant. :)

JOEY!!!
I'm so sorry! I hope all goes well and that you get much better sooner than 6 moths! Ancient of Days on :
Thanks, Mandi - you and me both! Six months is a really long time to be doing anything as invasive as this medication I'm on.

I'm sorry to hear about your thrombophilia. I will miss seeing you at the office for a while. Hope you get well soon.

Good Luck man!
Is it just me or are the medications "Lovenox" and "Warfarin" two of the coolest sounding medications ever? Ancient of Days on :
As I suggested to both MG and Radar: Do you think it's at all possible I'm actually taking a pill called "Worf Urine"?
