So glad that I figured out that you guys were using sarcasm in your posts. Because otherwise, I would have to disagree about everything you wrote about the Eyes-A-Dye.
Tuesday, March 26. 2013The Great Hunt: Chapters 18-23
I really enjoy these chapters because they start to humanize the Aes Sedai a little bit - we can start to understand the environmental factors that lead to them behaving the way they do. Chapter specific thoughts below the fold.
Chapter 18: The Amyrlin Seat is actually one of the very few Aes Sedai that seems like more than a some caricature; in fact, based on some things I've read outside of the series itself, I strongly believe that she is modeled on Robert Jordan's real wife, Harriet. We learn a bit more about the Aes Sedai, and the ship arrives at Tar Valon.
Chapter 19: Rand and company steal the Horn and the dagger from Fain. Not much memorable here. Chapter 20: Rand &co fleeing with the Horn, but Selene keeps wanting Rand to claim it. Something odd happens to Rand when he sees a giant statue being excavated, causing him to be unable to release the One Power. Selene seems to know more than she lets on about why. Chapter 21:Rand finds out more about the giant statue, and Selene leaves him in the middle of the night, somehow sneaking past guards. We learn of Dates Dae'mar, or as we call it, "politics". Chapter 22: Moiraine searches for answers. Lan is in love with Nynaeve, and Moiraine knows. If she dies, Lan will be compelled to go to some other Sister. The Black Ajah exists, and has sent a dragkhar after Moiraine, which means they also know where she is. Chapter 23: Becoming Aes Sedai This is actually one of my favorite parts of the Wheel of Time: the ritual for becoming Aes Sedai. The three arches, for past, present, and future; the way they have to face everything their minds can conjure up that might mean more to them than being Aes Sedai; it really, in some ways, kind of explains why Aes Sedai behave the way they do, what with the keeping of secrets and refusing to see any path forward but the one they've set their own minds on. I respect Nynaeve, and even Aes Sedai in general, a little bit more after "witnessing" her go through this ordeal. Trackbacks

LOL - sad Radar, he can't tell the difference between sarcastic and not. Feel free to disagree with me, but I was not being sarcastic...given the information we get in these chapters, I can start to understand how the indoctrination of becoming an Aes Sedai leads to the kind of people we get in this series.

I really enjoyed these chapters. Nynaeve's trial is brutal. I don't know if it's the stress at work or what, but I really felt like I lived through that with her.
I also love getting Moiraine's PoV, as she is my favorite character. :) |
