Microsummaries are Cool Posted by Ancient of Days

If you're like me, you're already playing with Mozilla 2.0 rc2...in which case, you're asking yourself, "What is a microsummary, and how can it make my life easier?"
Microsummaries build on top of the "live bookmarks" that Mozilla pioneered, adding the ability to have the bookmark's title actually change whenever the feed changes. In the case of the Homestarmy, it took me about 5 minutes to put together a microsummary feed for it. You can subscribe to it by visiting the Generator, clicking on "Install This Generator", and then making a new bookmark to the site using the steps laid out here. Also, if you want to make your own microsummary generators, use http://joeysmith.com/~joey/microsummary.xml and http://joeysmith.com/~joey/microsummary-generator.xsl. You'll want to replace "__URL__" and "__MICROSUMMARY__NAME__" in the first URL with the real values that pertain to your site. If you need help with the XPath statements, let me know. Enjoy! I mentioned this in passing to Anne last week, and just realized I never told anyone where to get it. The book is called "Autonomy - Freedom of Thought". It needs a lot of polish, but the ideas are very original (and exciting!). I recommend version . That's Sexagesimal for 1,477,716 (if my base 60 math is right!).
[Ed. note: My base 60 math was right, I just misread the image...saw a '.' where none existed! The correct translation is "(2006).(8).(26)". I would guess most of you can probably figure that out yourselves, though. ] Get it in PDF, Text, or ODT (OpenDocument, which you can open using [among others] OpenOffice). Tuesday, October 10. 2006

Most of you can safely ignore this.
"As the result of a boom in hiring for IT managers over the past five years, many IT professionals with stellar technical skills have been thrust into managerial roles. The number of IT managers employed in the United States has jumped 44% since the dot-com collapse of 2001, compared with a 19% decline in the number of programming and support jobs. IT managers now represent 11.2% of IT employment, the fourth-largest tech job category, up from 7.8% in mid-2001, when it ranked sixth overall. As a number of examples point out, this trend is critical for IT professionals to understand as they manage their own careers or make decisions about hiring and developing staffers. Even people who want to stay on a technical track must pay attention to this important trend, since it impacts the types of skills that are valued and the changing way that IT is used and implemented within organizations." OK, so I make a lot of noise about hating animals; you all know that. However, one of my dearest friends is Alison Gianotto, a woman who has helped my wife and I financially as well as emtionally over the years; and who also happens to be one of the most active Animal Rights people in the US. As a result, she has been selected as a top 10 finalist for the Animal Planet "Hero of the Year" award. Below the fold you will find more information about the contest, Alison, and her cause(s). I'm not looking for anyone to vote against their conscience, but if I may drop all pretense for a moment, I think you could do far worse than to vote for Alison.
If anyone has questions about Alison's activities, let me know. I can speak a bit more directly to what she does. Continue reading "I Hope You're Sitting Down, Because this Will Shock You" Tuesday, September 12. 2006
The New Monks - count me in! Posted by Ancient of Days

In his book "The Twilight of American Culture", Morris Berman predicts a dark age when much of Western learning could be eclipsed. The evidence is all around us, he says: the numbing reign of corporate influence, the mania for credentials and certifications over true learning, and a populace rendered nearly illiterate by its addiction to dumbed-down mass entertainment.
While that might seem like reason enough for despair, Berman looks to an ancient tradition for hope. Like those who once copied texts as a way to save them for a more enlightened time, a cadre of "new monastic individuals" must take up the task of protecting the knowledge the love. At Daboo's urging, I am going to leave these fine characters dangling for a bit whilst I chase something bright and twinkly on the horizon; although I fully intend to return to this story, she made some excellent points.

Become the ninja.
I also highly recommend the "Hope is Emo" series. I actually, literally wept with laughter. Thursday, July 27. 2006Why is it...
that everytime I start writing, everyone else seems to stop? :(
At the very least, Daboo should have enough free time on her hands to take up an epic storyline and astound us all. Monday, July 17. 2006

Here you go. I was unable to stump it, using characters from Firefly, Smallville, Mad about You, Babylon 5, or even Three's Company.
